How It Works
Apply in sixth grade.
Students apply to become a Kauffman Scholar in the spring of their sixth grade year. After an extensive application and interview process, approximately 200 Scholars are selected to participate in the program. Scholars are inducted into the program in August before beginning seventh grade.
We work intensively with students during their middle-school years to prepare them to take college-prep classes during high-school. By starting with seventh graders, the program can help those who may need to catch up on their reading and math skills, or who may need to improve study skills, organization, and/or time management.
Academic and life planning skills for middle school years.
Our 7th and 8th grade Scholars attend after-school programs to work on academic and life planning skills.
They also go on field trips, take college visits, attend summer programs and week-long college camps. Monthly parent meetings are also held during these years.
College preparation in high schools.
From 9th to 12th grade, the program's focus shifts to the college prep work students need to complete in high school. Academic coaches help students make course selections needed for acceptance into and success in college.
Scholars learn about standardized tests and the college entrance exam process. They visit college campuses and begin thinking about their career aspirations. By graduation, Kauffman Scholars have a strong plan in place and have chosen the college that best fits their needs and interests.
Help with choosing a college.
Kauffman Scholars can select from a number of "partner" colleges and universities. These partners have agreed to provide financial, academic, and social support to Kauffman Scholars attending their institutions.
The KSI staff helps each Scholar and his/her family develop a financial aid plan for college. KSI provides partial college scholarship assistance, yet also expects each student to seek out any available scholarship or grant that he/she may also qualify to receive.
Continued assistance during college years.
Students are connected with on-campus resources for academic or personal help as needed. KSI staff continues to monitor and stay involved with each Scholar.
Scholars also have opportunities for internships and assistance in career placement after college.
