College Bound

In the Fall 2009, 125 Class 1 Kauffman Scholars began their collegiate careers at colleges and universities across the country. The majority of these students are first-generation college students. As Kauffman Scholars, each student will have college scholarship assistance, awarded either from outside resources or KSI. Scholars will incur no college-related debt.

Ninety-five percent of those in Class 1 who have met the requirements of the program thus far, are now in college. Eighty percent are headed to four-year higher education institutions.

"We are tremendously proud of our first class of Scholars; they have traveled such a long way since our journey together began six years ago," said Dr. Steve Green, KSI President and CEO. "There are five Valedictorians and one Salutatorian in this group. We have Scholars who have received multiple scholarship awards, including a Scholar from Sumner Academy, who will study aviation at Prudue University, with an award from the Tuskegee Airmen. Another Scholar, attending Howard University, has been selected to receive the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship that is renewable for up to five years for an undergraduate degree in any discipline, and up to six years for graduate study in specific fields."

KSI is putting in place a Collegiate Academy to continue to provide enrichment for our Scholars while they are in college," Dr. Green continued. "We are creating a network of communication to support existing campus services and encourage Scholars to build on the ethnic or social and personal responsibility."
