What is expected of students?
Once a student becomes a Kauffman Scholar, there are expectations that must be met for him or her to remain in the program.
Although it may appear there are many requirements, Scholars must take these actions to be successful in the program. Specifically we expect Scholars to:
- Attend at least 85 percent of required program activities;
- Participate in Academic, Life, and College Coaching programs outside of school;
- Maintain a minimum of C or above grade in all classes;
- Maintain a high attendance record in school;
- Treat all Scholars and Staff in a courteous and respectful manner;
- Understand that Out-of-School and In-School Suspensions are considered serious offenses and may result in probation or removal from the program; and
- Participate in College Visits and Summer Programs.
What is expected of parents?
Students in the Kauffman Scholars program need the support of their parents or guardians to become successful.
At The core of the program is a "Scholar-Centric" approach that puts the young person at the center of everything. A network of parents, significant adults and peers in each student's life creates a human hedge of protection and support around each Scholar that helps him or her overcome obstacles and challenges. Specifically, we expect parents or guardians to:
- Attend 85 percent of the required program activities, including Parent Workshops, Community Service activities, Parent and Scholar conferences, and other events;
- Inform Kauffman Scholars staff if contact information changes;
- Report and discuss academic concerns;
- Attend all meetings requested by Staff related to their Scholar's academic and personal goals;
- Set high expectations at home and discuss these expectations with their Scholar regularly;
- Provide appropriate learning environment at home; and
- Encourage their Scholar to do the necessary work to improve academic achievement.
