What is College Prep?

Preparing for college means getting an early start on developing the academic and life skills that will help you become a successful college applicant. College is closer than it seems! Beginning in your middle school years, the courses you take and the activities you participate in really count toward your future.

Understand what colleges are looking for.

It's a good idea to review the admissions requirements of the universities and colleges you may be interested in attending; sometimes, state requirements for high school graduation do not match up with requirements for admission to higher education institutions.

Stand out from the crowd.

College admissions officers look for students who stand out from the crowd by taking challenging math and language arts classes, and getting good grades.

Studying science, history and geography every year is also advised. Studying a second language is another likely requirement for college entrance.

Take college preparatory classes.

Studies show that students who complete college preparatory classes are as successful, and often times more successful, in college-level courses than students who do not take college preparatory classes. This is due to students becoming familiar with the college setting and various transition issues that often take months of adjustment.

Participate in non-school related activities.

Admissions officers also like to find students who are well rounded.

It's important to participate in extracurricular activities that reflect your special interests and talents, such as drama, music, art or debate.

Becoming a volunteer and giving back through community service, or becoming an intern in a field that interests you, are other great ways to show college officials you are motivated and goal-oriented.
